Serbians Dominant At Roland Garros
By Bests | January 23, 2008
There is a lot to like about the emerging rising stars of Serbian tennis in the ATP and WTA series. Despite the chaos they experienced 8 years back in their homeland during those air strikes, what were very difficult times have only made these exceptional talents stronger. In what has seemed to have happened in the blink of an eye, three of the top ten players in the male and female tour are Serbian players. Novak Djokovic currently has an ATP ranking of 5, Jelena Jankovic has a WTA ranking of 5, and her fellow compatriot Ana Ivanovic is ranked number 7.
All three Serbian players were expected to perform well in this year’s 2007 French Open Grand Slam at Roland Garros, all demonstrating good form during the clay season leading into the tournament.
They have all played true their seeds and form, with both girls already reaching the Semifinals, and Djokovic reaching the Quarterfinals. Their French Open results are yet to be finalized with their games to be played over the next couple of days.
Janko Tipsarevic, another Serbian who is currently ranked 80 on the ATP tour, also showed some good form at Roland Garros, beating former number 1 Marat Safin on the way to reaching the third round. Tipsarevic says he draws a lot from the Serbians leading the way. The jealousy is a good thing as it makes him want to work harder to reach their level of play. “If they can do it, why can’t I?”.
In a post match interview with Novak Djokovic, he went onto explain the state of professional tennis in Serbia. In a country which basically only plays team based sports, Tennis doesn’t have a lot of priority, with very little infrastructure and support to further your game.
Jelena, Ana, and Novak have all done it on their own with the support of their family, leaving Serbia at an early age to get the adequate training required to be professional tennis players. All three players are great advocates for the sport of tennis in Serbia. It is amazing to think that Serbia, a country of about 10 million, has the same amount of top 10 players on the tour as the USA and Russia. Russia’s population is 141 million and the United States’ is 301 million.
