Can You Write Your Own Future?
By Jean-Paul Cortes
When we talk about the future, we often think it to be in some faraway place and time. It’s pretty hard for us to use our imaginations to describe our
tomorrows.
The concept of how time passes for us, is usually from future through present to past. We don’t stop to ponder whether there’s something we can do to alter
the way things are. It’s sort of been ingrained deep in our subconscious mind.
What we don’t realize is that by the very fact that we’re alive, we’re necessarily interacting with reality. We’re therefore affecting it with every breath we take, with every thought we have, with every action we do; there’s really no escaping from this.
When you come and think about it, there’s no real reason why we can’t take an active part is affecting our futures. Has anyone ever told us that it’s not a possibility?
If you get rather technical about it, you’ll say “well, all we have is our present moment”, and that’s true. Nevertheless, you can choose what you do with that moment, you’re the one that’s giving it shape in the first place.
So how do you make a difference?
You can start by writing your tomorrows, that’s it, focus just on tomorrow and then take some to write your thoughts down. How does it look like? Can you feel, see and hear it?
Describe it to yourself in lush detail…
Every human being has been given a wonderful gift by our very nature. Children seem to exploit it every day, it’s as adults that we somehow chuck it in the backs of our minds. Pretty soon, we forget how to use it and we start doubting whether or not we had it in the first place.
Children are master creators because they’re using their imaginations to shape their world. Have you ever tried to tell a 5 year old that the box he’s playing with is not a pirate ship? Even if you did, hard as you try, do you think he or she will care? To them it’s as real as the “Black Pearl”, and rest assured that in their minds it really is.
We spend a lot of time convincing ourselves of the stories of “real life”. And we start taking life way too seriously when we take everything to be true.
I’m not saying that we should close our eyes to circumstance, what I’m saying is that we shouldn’t forget that life is all about perceptions. Your’s, mine, your neighbor’s…
And that there is something that we can do to ensure our future success, and it can be a very easy, straightforward and enjoyable process.
If you find yourself being hesitant about writing your own future and dismiss it as “up in the air gobblygook”; it’s actually a practice that many leading success experts, use in their own way.
In his seminal book “Think and Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill talks about the necessity of desire as the thing that will drive us to success. In his words, “…persistence in standing back of a single DESIRE, was destined to mow down all opposition, and bring…the opportunity he was seeking”. A prior step to making
all happen, is being able to hold in your mind the image of the wanted outcome.
Ken Blanchard, the World famous writer of the One Minute Manager, teaches a technique called a “Five Year Fantasy”. He has people close their eyes and imagine everything going into a time warp; upon opening their eyes, he tells them, they’ve made a jump in time five years from that point. In the future, your life has been made perfect in every way; you then start to witness how your life has changed for the better.
The common thread between these two techniques, is the use of our imagination. The result is that by using them, we increase the likelihood of getting what we want, because we’ve programmed our minds to do so.
When we clarify our thoughts through creative imagination, such as when we decide to write our tomorrow; we subconsciously increase our desire and give our mind’s clear instructions of what it should set its aims to.
Pretty soon, almost without realizing it, we should find it easier to know exactly where we’re headed because we’ve made it a habit to describe the path to ourselves.
Go ahead, give it a try. Pick up a pen and paper, and awaken your creative genius by writing your own future.
