Children Of Divorce - 3 Things To Help Ensure Your Children Are Well-adjusted After A Divorce
By Bests | March 16, 2008
Divorce affects children in a way that will last a lifetime. When children go back and forth between two homes on a regular basis they are forced to remember different sets of rules, behaviors and values. Many people would say that this could be good preparation for life, but others would argue that it is too confusing for most children to be able to cope. Here are three ways to help ensure that your children will have the best possible chance to become well-adjusted, happy adults if they have been part of a divorce:
- Try to have open communication with your former spouse so that the children know that they come first with both of you. By speaking regularly about issues that involve your children, such as their health, schooling, and personal development, your children will feel more secure and know that they are loved by both families.
- Plan a vacation each year, if possible, where you take your children somewhere that is special for all of you. The memories that you create with these annual outings will last a lifetime for all of you and ensure that they feel special. Encourage your former spouse to do the same. Getting away from your normal surrounding can give children an opportunity for personal growth and a chance to talk to you about things they may have been hesitant about previously. They will also get to know a different side of you than they see when you are working and engaged in routine, daily life at home.
- Let your children know that they can talk to you about anything. Many times children are afraid to bring up issues that they think will upset or anger you in some way. By letting them know that no topics are off limits they will become more secure adults.
Your children are your most valuable asset. They are your future and you owe it to them to give them every tool possible to deal with life as they get older. By thinking about these three areas you can feel that your children are getting the very best from you that you have to offer.
